2903 Community Service Self-Reflection

  2903 Community Service Self-Reflection

My volunteer work was in Zayed Higher Organization which is for students with special needs. It started on 13 October and was for five days. There was an instructor and many students working in different departments like sports, carpentry, blacksmith work, electricity etc. They were many students with special needs and were working in different departments; hence we volunteer to work with them. Different days, I worked with different departments like on day one I worked with electricity department next day I was with students in carpentry who were making some designs with wood. I also visited a group of students who were taking their classes in different subjects who had deeper knowledge of topics than us. I also was involved in weaving workshop where students were making different bracelets to be sold in exhibitions.

I have learnt that these students are intelligent and have the ability which is much better than the
normal students.

This was an amazing experience of my life which I can never forget; this has brought a great change in my thinking and behavior. What I use to think about such people has made me change, after this experience, I realized that they are better than normal people, they know more meaning of work and life, they are more serious in their work and knowledge and not like us who simply take things easy.
I was impressed with one student in electric workshop who was Saleh Al Marri, who was genius and was expert in his field. I would like to be with him again, if I get a chance in future. He was so confident with his work which made me realize that if we believe in our abilities we can do anything.

Next time I would like to visit more such places and to know more about the things being done, I would like to be with such students and discover what things they have and are good in and how I can be a part of them.

This was a very good experience and I believe all students should be in involved in this in every college.

The printing and sports sections

On 10th of Oct were my fifth and the last observing visiting day to the workshops I chose to go to two places first I visit the printing workshop then I went to the sport section. In the printing workshop there are many things for the students to do such as cutting the papers, using different printing machines and create the final looks for different things that could be ordered from outside places such as logos or procures. They have a list of rules that the students should be reminded about them daily for their safety because some of the tools there could heart them.
Then I moved with them to the sport section which they like most, because there they start playing with each other basketball with their kind teacher.

The weaving workshop

On 3rd of Oct was my fourth visit to the ZHO and I chose to be in the Weaving workshop. In that workshop there are two teachers and 9 students who are autism and Down syndrome, and some of them need more care and safer place than others. Because of that the divided in groups so the ones who can work with the weaving tool in good way without hearting themselves were 3 students and they who work on weaving. Then there were 4 students who need more care and its difficult for them to use the weaving tools so they working on covering the done products. The sever disable students were 2 and they worked on tiding up the covered products only, for their safety. When I asked the teacher he told me that they most of the time working on weaving bracelets with different shapes and colors and then the sell them in the expiations. On that day they were working on creating bracelets with the UAE flag colors to cover an order of 1000 bracelets.

That day was a short working day for them because it was the flag day and they all gathering on the yard for celebrating the flag day.

The Electronics workshop

On 27th of Oct was my third visit to the ZHO and I chose to be in the Electronics workshop with Mr. Thomas. That section is for working, creating and building electronic things which really surprise me, to see that they can do such things with details and hard working. So some of them do small electronic cards that we need inside the electronic devices which without them the devices will be useless. Moreover other work on bigger thing such as robots, I saw Khalid while he was programing his own robot that he create and build it, and Khalid was one of the best students in that workshop.

-Week #2

In 20th of Oct was the second visit to ZOH and that day started at 8:00 am and finished at 1:00 Pm. I decided to enter two workshops, and they were the Academic section ( 8:00 am – 10:30 am) and carpentry workshop ( 11:00 am- 1:00 Pm ).

In Academy section there were 15 students with one teacher. The students were have different special needs and they were from different age ranges some are much older than others. The similarity that gathered them in that section was they all of them had already done with the basic workshops and they all evaluated as advance students than the others who still in the workshops. In that section the only one teacher is teaching them many different subjects (Math, Science, Arabic, Social studies and Religion) and the curriculum that they use is the same of the one that we used in our school. They learn the basic things such as shapes, simple math problem, and reading and writing, for me I helped one of the students in writing. I surprised when I sat and observe them while they were discussing with their teacher about different topics I found that they know deeper than what I thought before.

After the break which was from 10:30 am to 11:00 am I attend carprt workshop. This workshop is presented by Mr. Mohammed Al Hammadi and there they learn how to create different useful objects from wood weekly, so for each week they learn how to create one thing. In that day they were working on create a presenting plate, and the students were 5 so each two were working as pairs and the fifth one worked with the teacher. They were collaborating with each other very well so one of them was catching the object and the other one using the machine. They have many resources in that room such as different machines measurement tools that make the work easier and more professional. That day was ended up with finishing one plate.

-Week #1

13 Oct 2015 was first volunteering day for my group in ZHO. Ms Maitha Almuhairi took us round special needs departments which include 11 departments (Carpentry, blacksmithing, electricity and so on). Each one of us choose department to stay on it even we will exchange departments weekly. That was absolutely new experience in our life.

They gave us the choice to choose which workshop to be in in that day. For me I chose to enter the electricity workshop, which includes 6 special need students and their teacher Mr. Muntaser. In that workshop the student did many things related to the electricity some more complex than others, such as working on electricity safety and creating electrical circles to match the electricity to any device, and others are working on preparing wires ( cut and reuse them ). In that section one student called Saleh AL Marri  who looks like that he is the most expert student between them, because he was working on the hardest thing which is electricity safety and he was helping others in their works.  I sat and work with one of those who were cutting and reusing wires, because he looks like that he need help and then I found that he is a new student there.

Exercise #8   Research project - Volunteers in Education

Have a look at this page on the internet:http://www.worldvolunteerweb.org/browse/sectors/education.html

This page has some ideas about how people can volunteer through education projects.

Once you have read through the pages, you need to work in volunteer project groups.
In your groups, come up with or choose a project which you think can be advanced through an educational setting. There are no restrictions, but your idea should be innovative and should aim at adding real value to the people you are trying to help.

As you are working through your project, one of you should be putting together a short presentation (Powerpoint, etc) to explain to the rest of the group what you are trying to achieve; 3-5 minutes.

You should aim to cover the following points, at least:

1.                   What are the aims of the project ?
1, eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
 2, achieve universal primary education.
3, puts a woman and a man on the same level.
 4, reduce child mortality.
5, is a poignant reminder that every minute a woman dies due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth.
6, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
7, is a call to action to ensure environmental sustainability.
8, of global partnerships for development is signified by distant balloons. IN Kosovo

2.                   Who are the target audience, and why?
All ages are involved in this project program but they focus on the children's.
3.                   What activities would your project involve?
Provide jobs to people in kosovo and shelter ,and build schools and provide free food for the kosovian people.
4.                   Who would be volunteering? Why?
The expert people for example teachers ,engineers and volunteers..etc all this expert peopl have already skills to serve the kosovian unlike the people don't have.
5.                   What are the benefits your project could bring to the target audience?
Actually the benefit will be for most of people because they will be satisfied about the additional help for them also for their children, which will achieve a great and balanced future for them.
6.                   How would you look into launching your project with reference to the relevant authorities in the UAE and in the country you have targeted?
That can be achieved in Schools, Sport clubs,  , and other authorities in our country which can spend effort for helping people; or in any other county like in the case that we have which is about Kosovo.
7.                   What problems do you think you might come across and how would you try to get around them?
We may have problems with the money to buy the equipment for sick people and some stuff for the children and also maybe we have a problem with place for the volunteers and we can solve that if some important people helped us.

Human Rights Activity # 3:

Working in pairs, discuss and write how these rights relate to the different levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?

Its related because its basic things that the human need in his life and some of them are just repeated but in deferent way so, here in human rights is in detail but in Maslow’s are not.

1.     working in pairs, go to Google Maps (or a similar site) and download an image of the map of the city of Abu Dhabi, where you live.

2.     Analyze your map from a human rights perspective. What human rights do they associate with different places on their maps? For example, a mosque with freedom of thought and religion; the school with the right to education; the post office with the right to information, to privacy, and to self-expression. As they identify these rights, they should look up the relevant article(s) in the UDHR and write the article number(s) next to that place on the map.

3.     Present the map to the whole class OR dicuss what rights are in your neighborhood.

Did any parts of your map have a high concentration of rights? How do you explain this?

yes, schools and we have the basic things that we need like supermarkets, but we still need other things, also we live in new area so its need some time to get ready.
